Turning screws

A turner who turns screws is responsible for processing the material in order to obtain the appropriate shapes and dimensions of screws. It is a mechanical machining process that involves rotating the processed material around a rotary axis. Then you move the cutting tool along the axis of the material to remove excess material and form threads. To perform this work, a turner uses lathes, specialized industrial machines equipped with appropriate tools and devices.

Screw turning – Types of tools

Lathes used to turn screws are not the only machines used in the production process. There are also milling machines that can be used to create screw threads. Especially when producing larger screw sizes or more complex shapes. However, lathes are most commonly used because of their ability to precisely form threads and the ability to machine material from all sides.

The turner also uses metal cooling systems that help maintain the appropriate temperature during machining and remove heat generated during the cutting process. In addition, waste cleaning systems, called spoil cleaning systems, are also used to remove waste material from the turning area. This helps keep the machine clean and improves the quality of processed screws.

Screw turning – Types of lathes

The types of lathes used to produce screws include single-spindle lathes, multi-spindle lathes, and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathes. They enable precise control of the machining process. Single-spindle lathes are most often used to produce single screws of various sizes and shapes. In contrast, multi-spindle lathes can be used to machine multiple screws simultaneously on different spindles.

Types of screws

The types of screws produced by a turner may include:

  • ordinary screws, used to connect elements in various industries,
  • threaded screws, are used for precision applications such as precision mechanics and the aerospace industry,
  • special screws, designed to meet special requirements such as corrosion resistance, high temperature or high loads.

Each type of screw has its own specific application and manufacturing requirements that must be taken into account by the turner during the machining process. Due to their importance for industry, screws must meet not only the requirements regarding dimensions. Very often they must also meet standards for strength, temperature and material hardness.
