MMA welding

MMA (Manual Metal Arc) welding, also known as coated electrode welding. In the USA it is known as SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding). This welder is responsible for joining metals by melting the coated electrode and the base material using an electric arc. During welding, the coated electrode, guided manually by the welder, melts. The gas arising from the surrounding encapsulating material then protects the metal alloy and electrode from atmospheric contaminants. MMA welding requires precision, manual skills and knowledge of occupational safety rules.

MMA welding – Tools

Several tools and equipment are used to perform MMA welding. The key tool is the MMA welder, which supplies the current needed to maintain the electric arc. Welding also requires coated electrodes, which vary depending on the type of base material and welding requirements. Other tools include a welding hammer for chipping away unnecessary parts of the weld. Moreover, a grinder for smoothing and cleaning welded surfaces, as well as a welding mask and protective gloves to ensure the welder’s safety.

The MMA method is used to weld various types of metals and installations. It can be used for welding carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and various metal alloys. Installations that are welded using the MMA method include steel structures in construction and pipelines in the oil and gas industry. In addition, metal structures in the machinery industry and many other applications in various sectors.

Requirements

The ideal candidate for the position of an MMA welder should have appropriate qualifications and skills. Vocational or technical education in welding or a related field is required. The candidate should have experience in MMA welding and knowledge of various types of electrodes and their applications. The ability to read technical drawings and welding plans is also important, as is an understanding of occupational safety and welding regulations.

Depending on the workplace, an MMA welder performs different tasks. On a construction project, he may be responsible for welding and assembling steel structures, pipes and pipelines according to construction plans. In an industrial company, he is involved in serial production of metal components. Moreover, it may specialize in a specific type of welding or materials, depending on the needs of the company and industry.
